Niki Kasumi Clements (Rice): “True Confessions: Foucault in the Archives” (On Zoom)
Niki Kasumi Clements
Why was Foucault so interested in Christianity? And why is Foucault’s recently published Confessions of the Flesh (2018/2021) still surprising in its sole emphasis on early Christian texts? How is Foucault’s engagement with forms of Christianity and the genealogy of subjectivity in his last decade useful for the study of religion? And how is the study of religion today useful for better understanding the work he completed in his final years? In this discussion of work in progress, Prof. Niki Kasumi Clements connects her recent research in the Foucault archives at the Bibliothèque nationale de France with her 2021 open-access article “Foucault’s Christianities.”
