Religious Studies Colloquium: Brannon Ingram, "Critiquing the Category of Religion in Muslim South Asia"
Brannon Ingram, Northwestern University
Brannon Ingram (Northwestern) will join us to discuss his work in progress, "Critiquing the Category of Religion in Muslim South Asia." Here's an abstract:
Is Islam a religion? Some Muslims in late colonial India and postcolonial Pakistan didn't think so. For them, "religion" was everything they believed Islam was not: private, apolitical, making no claims on public life. This talk explores how their critique of the category of religion came about and reflects on its implications for how we conceptualize religion in the academy today.
