From Indian-owned homes and marketplaces in West Africa to temples and World War II military camps in India, the West African engagement with Hindus and their religious objects, images, and magical texts, combined to give meaning to West Africans concerning the supernatural. In the process, India became synonymous with potent spiritual power and magic. Imagined as such, India offered West Africans a vocabulary to express and address their everyday spiritual needs, hopes, anxieties, and wonderment.
